Barrie Hesp, Ph.D.

Former ICI/Zeneca and Pfizer Executive

Barrie Hesp, Ph.D., President of Oreti Associates and former executive at Pfizer and Zeneca, has extensive experience in research and development in the pharmaceuticals industry and in establishing strategic alliances with biotechnology companies.

Dr. Hesp joined the Pharmaceutical Division of ICI (subsequently Zeneca) in 1968, where he held various research management positions. Dr. Hesp is recognized for the quality of the chemistry research group he built during his tenure as Director of Medicinal Chemistry. He was appointed Vice President for Biomedical Research, ICI Americas, in 1991 and was responsible for ICI/Zeneca’s drug discovery research programs in the USA. Two drugs originating from his research group are now marketed in the USA (AccolateR and SeroquelR).

Dr. Hesp served as Vice President, Strategic Alliances, Pfizer Global Research and Development from 1995 until 2001, where he oversaw the development of Pfizer’s broad-based portfolio of collaborative research programs. These collaborative programs covered all stages of the pharmaceuticals research and development paradigm. For much of his period with Pfizer Dr. Hesp’s department was also responsible for technical support of Pfizer’s product in-licensing activities. Following acquisition of the former Warner-Lambert, the Strategic Alliances department had offices in the U.S.A., the U.K. and Japan. Pfizer has been recognized as a preferred partner in a number of surveys and reviews, and was the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Licensing Executives Society in 2000.

Dr. Hesp received B.A. (Class 1 Honors), M.A., and D.Phil. degrees, all from Oxford University, U.K., and was a NATO Postdoctoral at the University of California, Berkeley. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Keystone Symposia and of the Committee of Chemistry and Public Affairs of the American Chemical Society. Dr. Hesp serves on a number of Boards and Science Advisory Boards of biotechnology companies.
