 Professor Mark P. Wentland
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York, U.S.A.
Former Sterling Winthrop Executive
Professor Mark P. Wentland, Ph.D. has been a Professor of Chemistry at
Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute since 1994. During the period from 1971
through 1994 Prof. Wentland was Adjunct Professor of Chemistry at Rensselaer
and taught over 30 graduate-level organic and medicinal chemistry courses.
At Rensselaer, he maintains a federally-funded research program in medicinal
chemistry aimed at identifying novel, long-acting oral agents to treat
cocaine and heroin addiction in humans. Prof. Wentland also has developed a
new Drug Discovery course, where students learn and practice modern
techniques of drug discovery. He regularly lectures at pharmaceutical and
biotech companies on applications of physicochemical properties of organic
molecules to lead compound identification and development.
Prof. Wentland joined the medicinal chemistry department at Sterling
Winthrop Inc. in 1971. During his 24 years of experience he held various
positions of scientific and administrative responsibility, the last of which
were a Sterling Winthrop Fellow and Oncology Discovery Co-Chair.
During his career, Prof. Wentland has made significant contributions to the
discovery of nine drug candidates, six of which have been advanced to
clinical trials.
Prof. Wentland earned his Ph.D. in synthetic organic chemistry under the
direction of the late Professor Robert V. Stevens at Rice University.
