Professor Wittko Francke

Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. Wittko Francke has been a Professor of Chemistry at the University of Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany, since 1985. Since 1991, Prof. Francke has been Director of the Department of Marine Organic Chemistry, and from 1994 to 1999 he served as Dean of the Department.

Prof. Francke's main research interests cover a broad spectrum of natural products chemistry, including the identification and synthesis of physiologically active and behavior-mediating compounds (semiochemicals) from insects, plants, and marine organisms.

Since 1996, Prof. Francke has served as the Chairman and member of the Board of the Liebig-Vereinigung of the GDCh, which represents the scientific community of organic chemists in Germany, and from 1986 to 1993 he was Councilor and President of the International Society of Chemical Ecology. Prof. Francke is also a co-editor and a board member of the European Journal of Organic Chemistry, Journal of Chemical Ecology, and Chemoecology. Prof. Francke is the author and co-author of more than 250 research papers, 10 book chapters and 15 patents. He earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Hamburg in Germany.

Prof. Francke's international awards include the Honorary Medal of the International Society of Chemical Ecology (ISCE), the Otto-Wallach Medal of the German Chemical Society, and an Honorary Doctoral Degree of Gothenburg University in Sweden.
